Best Vacuum for Frieze Carpet & How to Clean (Be Careful!)

Updated July 2022

Frieze is a unique carpet, so does it require a unique vacuum cleaner? Yes, it does (this is why we say be careful!). You wouldn’t be the first person to buy a new frieze you love, and ruin it with a vacuum cleaner.  So what is the best vacuum for frieze carpet you should buy for your new frieze? And what steps should you take to clean it? Fortunately, there are answers to these questions. We share with you the best way to keep your frieze clean without damaging it.

Why is frieze unique?

One thing frieze has going for it is it’s not a loop carpet. Vacuum cleaners can snag loops and unravel the carpet. This isn’t a problem with frieze, but it does have a similar issue. If you (or your vacuum cleaner) are very rough on frieze, it will leave behind a bunch of fuzz.

So what’s the secret to a vacuum that will clean frieze without shredding it?

To start, you need a vacuum that has a rotating beater bar/brush that can be turned off. These brushes rotating quickly and can slowly shred your frieze strands. This happens over time but is unsightly. The ability to turn off the brush prevents this. There may be times where you still want to use the brush to get a particularly dirty spot, and you can easily turn the bar back on with the flip of a switch.

You can find vacuums that fit your need by using Amazon’s vacuum selection tool by clicking here.

I want to be transparent that the site does get a small commission if you buy through Amazon. This helps Frieze Carpet Guide provide you free, useful, and accurate information. The great thing about Amazon is they have great prices for you (and this price is not changed at all by us receiving a commission), and they have a huge selection so any vacuum I want to recommend is available. In other words, the small commission doesn’t change what I recommend or what you pay.

With that said, here are a few vacuums I would purchase based on my budget:

Other frieze cleaning tips

There’s no big secret here. Friezes are often made of nylon, and since they are often higher end carpet, it’s not uncommon for them to have good stain resistance. The only problem with good stain resistance is sometimes people are less careful thinking the carpet is invincible to stains. Believe me, it isn’t. With this said, it gives you extra time to clean up a spill before the stain sets in. If a spill occurs, take these steps:

Blot the liquid up as soon as possible. This is the key. Then, you can use a carpet cleaner such as this one! Any carpet cleaner will work, but make sure to test it on an area of your carpet that you don’t mind if it gets ruined first. There are cases where a cleaner doesn’t mesh with a carpet and actually leaves the carpet worse than it was before.

Conclusion on cleaning frieze

You don’t have to get the best vacuum for your new frieze carpet, you just have to get a vacuum that won’t damage it. You’ve invested enough money into your frieze; hopefully these tips will help you make it last for years. If you read nothing else, just make sure that your vacuum has the ability to turn off the brush (like those above) and is of decent quality. Clean up spills as soon as they occur. And don’t forget to occasionally get your carpet professionally cleaned.

This is the ONLY article I have found that addresses the the right vacuum for frieze carpet. I was very surprised to know the vacuum with beater bars can actually damage your carpet with constant use. We just had new frieze carpet installed, and were looking for the right vacuum. Bought a Dyson Ball pet vacuum, and returned the next day!! This article was very informative, I definitely have a better idea on which vacuum to look for!!!
    Thank you so much!!
